Gridiron Australia has appointed former NFL Europe Coach John Leijten as Head Coach of its snr national team for its campaign to compete in 2011 IFAF World Cup to be held in Austria.

Leijten, who was born in Australia but raised in The Netherlands, has been successful coaching in Europe, winning Dutch, German and European Championships. In the NFL Europe, his team, the Amsterdam Admirals appeared in 2 consecutive World Bowl Championships games winning it in 2005.

“I am very excited to be working with the all Australian players so that we can build the strongest Australian team ever. There is lots of hard work to do and not much time to do it in but I am confident that we can show great improvement once our plans are implemented”

Gridiron Australia is pleased to have someone of John's ability and experience to be able to lead our snr team and prepare it for the World Cup and with the possibility of having some of our US based college players being available to be part of the team, it will give John the opportunity to mould and form a competitive team and one to be respected Chairman Michael Ryan said.

John will hit the ground running, beginning with the selection of his coaching staff and then evaluating the talent that will be on show at the Gridiron Australia senior national championships being held in Melbourne April 10-16 this year.

“It is my plan to build an Australia wide network of people to help build a strong national program.  We will find scouts, coaches, trainers, athletic coaches etc. All of which are needed to build a successful program”

Rockingham Vipers vs Perth Blitz

The 2009/10 season ended much like the 2008/09 season. The league leading Vipers again emerged victorious from a tough semi-final game against the Broncos, while the 3rd placed Blitz again defeated the higher ranked Steelers.

Last years championship saw the Vipers get out to an early lead but the Blitz were able to get themselves back into the game in the second half. The scores went back and forth but the Blitz came up short and the Vipers earned their fourth championship.

The head coaches of the two leading teams in Gridiron West this season have been handed coaching honours for the second annual GW Senior All-Star game.
Rockingham Vipers maestro Phil Mullan has been selected to coach the South team while Westside Steelers boss Dale Murray has been named to lead the North, who won last year’s low-scoring inaugural exhibition 6-2. The game will again be played at Tregonning Oval in Verdun Street, Nedlands on Saturday, 27 February 2010.
For the first time, a Gridiron West Junior All-Star clash will be played before the Senior All-Star game. Rockingham Vipers mentor Nate Lansdale and Broncos coach Lane Honda have been named to lead the South and North Junior sides respectively. WA Raiders head coach Craig Wilson will be a keen observer on the day as he eyes the final make-up of a team charged with delivering WA a Senior National Championship in April. Wilson will have some say in the make-up of both Senior All-Star teams, which will be announced on Grand Final day. All players selected for the All-Star game will be invited to be part of the WA Raiders squad.

Broncos Juniors win club's first ever championship

The league leading Perth Broncos met the defending champion Westside Steelers in the 2010 Junior Championship game today. This is the second meeting between the teams in a championship game, with the Broncos having lost the previous matchup two years ago. The Broncos hoped to repeat the result of their last outing against the Steelers, a 50-0 rout, while the Steelers hoped the return of their QB would make the difference and lead them to a third successive championship victory.

1st vs 4th - Seniors - Vipers vs Broncos

E-mail Print PDF

Semi final weekend.

1st vs 4th - Vipers vs Broncos

This game will be a brutal affair. As always the Broncos have the potential and usually match up well with the Vipers. Last year, in the same game, the Vipers went on to win after shutting out the Broncos in the red zone.

Vipers have been considered by most the dominant team this season. Being plagued with injuries and perhaps a little of the GW apathy that seems to sneak in, the Vipers have had an overall good season, seeing rookies take up spots normally reserved for the "old crew". Benny G has a strong passing game with a good sneak thrown in if he sees it open. Nate, either leading another runner, or being led through the holes or even around the outside brings a very potent running game. Power running provided with Bambi, Big J, Donk or Freak. Offensive and Defensive lines are filled with all-stars and when they fire, they are hard to stop. Going to be a big ask for the Broncos on the weekend.

Broncos - Broncos have had another year with rookies standing up and making the difference. The stalwarts of the team are starting to get a bit long in the tooth, so it is good to see the new blood making a difference. Sketty has had complete control of the offence this year on the field, and given a little time, can effectively run the option offence. Great runner and if the Offensive line can give him the time, the Broncos may just suprise the Vipers. Jesse (RB) has been learning the game well, and will manage to break out big runs given a little daylight. Has the potential to be one of the best TB's the Broncos have seen in many years. Bluey, Beau, Dave (Wally), Condor and others provide a very strong secondary which are expected to give Benny G a few issues with his passing game.

This game comes down to the O and D lines. Broncos run a wide split offence giving the Broncos the outside run and Vipers touch shoulders on the offensive line giving Benny G the protection he needs.
